“During the development of Amigo Hall and Romero House in the precincts of St George’s Cathedral Southwark, I was delighted to work closely with Jonathan Louth & his team, who helped ensure the project was a true partnership between CAFOD & the Diocese of Southwark”

About ArConsulting

Jonathan Louth ArConsulting is rooted in analysis and synthesis from an architectural and development perspective, almost always in the context of a development that has previously proved unviable or failed to obtain necessary consents. “Provincial Council is continually grateful for your frank, clear explanations about context & funding of the various projects which underpin our partnerships here: you clearly have the capacity to fuse the different remits of the Friars – as freeholder & leaseholder communities and the trading company – with the activities of our tenants to the benefit of the estate.”

Fr Brendan Grady  |  Prior Provincial  |  Carmelite Charitable Trust

Background

ArConsulting is known to be particularly attentive to detail but does not get caught up in minutiae. The team appreciates the operational challenges of complex projects and retains a strategic outlook.

We understand the historic significance of older buildings that must perform in a modern environment, especially in a World Heritage Site or other historic setting with the eyes of the world looking on. For many years, Jonathan was a member of the strategic delivery boards for regeneration in the “Maritime Greenwich” World Heritage Site.

In particular, ArConsulting has professional experience of some properties on the northern parliamentary estate at Richmond House on Whitehall adjacent to the Palace of Westminster. From 2000 to 2016, Jonathan led a series of internal and external alterations for ministerial security and public access throughout the Richmond House estate, for the then DHSS, and later advised on the Old Library at 85 Whitehall.

Jonathan Louth’s team designed several subtle small-scale alterations to the exterior and interior, meeting the occupier’s needs while respecting the historic fabric of the grade II* listed building.  Their thoughtful alternative designs for a proposed extension to the Whitehall front of the Richmond House building showed an understanding of the constraints of the building form and the Conservation Area.”

Clients

Selected Experience – a list of principal clients/projects/sites during the practice period to date

Jonathan Louth ArConsulting holds a reputation built less on a specific range of project types than on a pattern of resolving project viability, whether the project has previously failed to obtain consents or has a consent that is not viable in the current marketplace.

Early work thus included new build and/or extensions and refurbishments across a wide range of client sectors, for change of use between commercial, leisure, residential, ecclesiastical, professional sectors.  The portfolio encompasses a number of strategic urban development masterplans and feasibility concept commissions, both for local authorities and commercial developers, prior to the client settling on a solution.

Recent & current work includes more specifically historic building projects (conservation, restoration, alteration & extension).

Experience & Skills

“I have used Jonathan for over 10 years on a number of projects on both listed buildings and conservation areas. Whilst providing the client (me) with practical and economically viable solutions these were always sympathetic to the surroundings with a supporting explanation to the client for his proposals. Besides his sympathy and obvious love for historic architecture, Jonathan is very creative and adaptable. “

David Hillman  |  Hillco Ltd | Residential Developer

“In my role as a Trustee of a major historic buildings estate [the Old Royal Naval College], I found Jonathan’s analysis & presentation of the wider issues of the whole complex very compelling. His firm may be small but his vision & intelligence are not.”
